The IT Rules prohibit any online real money game that involves wagering on outcomes. The assent of the Governor to the Bill came a day after the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2023 ( IT Rules) were notified by the central government on 6 April 2023. Online rummy and poker have been banned as games of chance under the Act, and other online games could be prohibited as well in the future by the state government. The Act prohibits online gambling and online games of chance played for money or other stakes. On 7 April 2023, the Governor gave his assent to the Bill and on 10 th April 2023, the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Act, 2022 ( TN Act) came into force. In March 2023, the same bill was introduced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The Governor, after a three-month delay, refused assent to the bill stating that the State Assembly lacked legislative competence. In October 2022, the Tamil Nadu state government published an ordinance to regulate online gaming and subsequently passed a bill on the same in October 2022.
